Eating out with a mixed crowd

Hi Reader,

So at some point, you’re gonna want to hang out socially and usually social gatherings center around food right?

So you want to go out with your friends and of course you are the ONLY plant based/vegan person in the group, but you don’t want to be seen as “that guy”.

You know, the pain in the ass that always complains that they can’t find anything they can eat on the menu.

The one who feels they are always stuck eating salad with a side of fries, or dry pasta…again.

So, I’m gonna give you some practical tips on how you can eat out with a mixed crowd (even in a steakhouse) while maintaining your plant based/vegan lifestyle.

Ok, so for one thing, as we now live in an age of technology, most of us have access to the internet/phone/computer, etc.

Many a restaurant menu is now online, (prices included) so how easy is it to check on what a place has BEFORE you even get there?

  • You can put together some sides (think a la carte) and you’ve got a meal for the evening.
  • Or order a large salad to fill you up and get a side or grilled/roasted veggies and you’re good.
  • Steakhouse? What goes better with steak than

-baked potato,

-grilled asparagus,

-sauteed mushrooms? You get it?

You know what else you can do if you truly don’t know how you can put something together?

Call the restaurant.

Tell them your dietary restrictions and ask if they could put something together just for you. Chefs actually don’t mind, it gives them a chance to try something new out of the usual menu.

If you have a say in things, opt in for ethnic food like

  • Italian
  • Mexican
  • Asian

You know why?

Ethnic foods rely heavily on vegetables so they will have a variety of options handy making things easier for you to customize.

Let me give you a couple of ideas:

Italian Restaurant:

Focus on appetizers and build your meal around a few of them (just omit the cheese)

-bruschetta

-bread with olive oil

-tomato salads

Mains

-build your own pasta

-add olive oil or marinara

-add roasted veggies like eggplant/mushrooms or artichokes

Build your own pizza

-get it marinara and add on your favorite toppings

Mexican Restaurant:

Most have vegetarian options that can be made vegan

-rice (ask if made with water or veggie stock, if not get white)

-black beans are typically safe (refried beans could be veggie based or made with lard, just ask)

-tortillas

-fajitas (just vegetable)

-burritos (swap out meat and cheese for just vegetables)

-guacamole/pico de gallo

Asian Restaurant:

Most asian dishes don’t have dairy so it’s not too difficult to find vegan options

-veggie spring rolls

-fried rice (veggie, no egg)

-noodles (veggie, no egg)

-pad thai (no egg, no fish sauce)

-tofu dishes

-steamed veggie dishes

-sauteed veggie dishes

So as you can see from the list above, it’s not impossible to go out with a mixed crowd, have a great time, and actually find something that you can eat and actually get full from.

Let me know if you’ve found these tips useful, I’d love your feedback.
